CHIROPRACTIC MANIPULATION FOR SPORTS-RELATED BACK PAIN

Adult athletes commonly experience back pain with a lifetime prevalence of 63%. The annual prevalence was 51%. Risk factors included a previous episode of low back pain, high training volume, and times of load increase and exposure to these. (1) How might it be treated? Physician members of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine are recorded as using a number of different complementary alternative medicine treatments for sports related pain problems. A recent survey of these physicians reported that 88% of the 11% who answered that they suggested CAM had done so for at least one type of CAM in the past year. The top 3 types of CAM suggested were chiropractic/osteopathic manipulation, acupuncture/electroacupuncture and yoga. (2) Another study reported that 53.1% of physicians advocated at least one such CAM approach in the past 12 months. Massage therapy, chiropractic/osteopathic manipulation, herbs/non-vitamin supplements, yoga, and acupuncture were most advocated. Family/general family practice physicians recommended chiropractic/osteopathic manipulation most often. More female than male physicians were more likely to recommend massage, herbs/supplements, yoga, acupuncture, and mind-body therapies. (3) Our chiropractic clinic welcomes all referrals and appreciates that our chiropractic spinal manipulation tops the list of medical physician referrals! And our Cox® Technic spinal manipulation is safe, gentle and useful.
